Battle for the Internet

Free and open internet is at risk because the Federal Commerce Commission has proposed rules that would allow internet companies to provide two tiers of internet – a slow lane and a fast lane. Of course the fast lane is only open to wealthy companies willing to pay more. That puts non-profits, like the Sierra Club, and any businesses unable or willing to pony up fat fees at a disadvantage. It would also allow cable companies to discriminate against anyone with content they don’t like – think about what that will do to climate change education.

Net neutrality means that everyone has equal opportunities to be heard online. It means that organizations can’t be discriminated against and it means that small businesses have a chance to reach new customers. The internet has been a driver for innovation and we can’t let big cable stifle new ideas and creativity.
