In April, Sierra Club is kicking off a nationwide celebration in honor of the National Park 100th Anniversary with over a 100 outings. One of them is ours! Join us on
April 30th May 1 at 10:30AM.
Did you know that Herbert Hoover National Historic Site is our closest national park? Even if you were aware of its proximity, you may not have realized that besides Herbert Hoover’s birthplace cottage, three historical buildings and the presidential grave site, there is also a beautiful 81 acre tall grass prairie! Along with a National Park Service ranger, we will hike two miles of trails that traverse through plains and sloping hills, which overlook the park. The rating of difficulty for the hike is “moderately easy.”
We will meet at 10:30 at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site Visitor Center. It’s easy to confuse it with the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, so look for the large National Park Service arrowhead sign on the building! From there, we will walk through the park to the prairie. A National Park Service ranger will lead our nature hike. Afterwards, we will have our picnic lunches in a shelter on the site. Jerry Neff, our outings chair, will provide dessert with a National Park Service anniversary cake!
If your time allows, please stay for a tour of the buildings on the site, led by me. I was fortunate to work as a teacher-ranger several years ago at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site! I’ve dusted off my interpretation materials and am anxious to share the story of this special place!
This outing will give us a chance to enjoy the outdoors; experiencing nature at a national park. With the National Park Service turning 100 years old, it reminds us of the importance of ensuring our country’s “best idea” is preserved for future generations. Visiting this historic site also, reminds us that our national parks not only preserve the beauty of our wild lands and all the life it supports, but they preserve the stories that chronicle the history of our great country.
Directions: Take I-80 west to West Branch, Iowa and then Exit 254. Follow signs to Herbert Hoover National Historic Site Visitor Center. Travel time is approximately an hour from the Quad Cities. Please register for this outing so we don’t start without you and so Jerry knows how many cakes to bake!
